Our client is one of the world’s major consumer products companies. Their products involve some complex recipes including certain mixture combination rules that were required to be strictly adhered to.

The Problem

The work effort to comply with these rules was tedious and the criteria for setting the rules lacked transparency; very few had enough knowledge and experience to properly deal with the formulation rules. About 20% of their research initiatives were scrapped after false starts when they discovered that they had mixed primary components in error. Each incident cost the company in wasted materials, lost lab resources and time, and delayed the achievement of business objectives. A previous attempt to alleviate the problem with spreadsheets proved ineffective because they were simply too inflexible.

The Solution

We developed a compounding and formulation application based on JMP software with predictive modeling capabilities that made it easy for scientists to develop experiments that always followed the rules.
