Media: Dynamic Illustrations Download Library
Get your staff or clients up to speed fast in Statistical Methods and Concepts – FREE. Download all illustrations (JMP 7.02 or better required) here.
Dynamic illustrations (also known as simulators) allow your staff and colleagues to actively engage concepts. The entire organization, including engineers and managers, can learn how these concepts behave by manipulating them and seeing how they respond. This activates learning and active learning leads to rapid application.
You are welcome to download, use and distribute the scripts freely (email, USB drive, etc. but you may not distribute them from your website – instead, please place a link there to this page). You are not allowed to change the scripts or incorporate them in any way in any other product nor may you charge a fee for its distribution.
Instructions
Once downloaded unzip the file to de-archive the individual illustrations. Double click on the individual script files to open them up or open them from the File menu. For those using JMP 7, you will need to type CTRL-R ( command-R on a Mac) to launch the script. For those running JMP 8, as soon as you open the file the script will automatically run.
Each illustration has a “Download Instructions” button which will allow you to download an Acrobat/PDF file detailing the illustration’s features.
Topics Covered
» t distribution & hypothesis testing (t-tests 1/2 sided, p-values)
Many textbooks cover the t-test and t-distribution. We go further with this dynamic illustration. Engage the t-distribution by adjusting n, the sample size, as well as alpha.
Concepts taught include:
- p-values and hypothesis tests (t-test)
- t-values
- z-scores
- sample-size effect on t-distribution and t-tests
- alpha, Type I errors

» confidence intervals for the mean and standard deviation (alpha, t, sample size, etc.)
Get a close look at confidence intervals for both mean and standard deviation.
Concepts taught include:
- one and two-sided confidence intervals
- effect of sample size and alpha on confidence intervals
- intervals based on t, z and chi-square
- Type I errors

» capability analysis (Cp, Cpk, etc. Confidence Iintervals for Cp)
Capability analysis can be understood with this JMP-based dynamic illustration. Explore a variety of indices by adjusting the target, specifications – 1 and 2-sided, symmetrical / asymmetrical – and process variation. Position the mouse over the indices, sliders and other elements in the illustration to reveal explanatory.
Concepts taught include:
- Cpk, Cp, Cpu, Cpl
- distance to the nearest specification
- defects, PPM, Yield
- adjustable 1 and 2-sided specifications, symmetrical/asymmetrical
- effects of process location, target and centeredness
- effects of sigma

» oneway ANOVA & power
You are welcome to download, use and distribute the scripts freely (email, USB drive, etc. but you may not distribute them from your website – instead, please place a link there to this page). You are not allowed to change the scripts or incorporate them in any way in any other product nor may you charge a fee for its distribution.
Concepts taught include:
- Type I and Type II Errors
- Power and Operating Characteristics Curves
- Affects of alpha, n, s and delta on power
- Interpreting p-values
- Confidence Intervals
- Hypothesis testing
- t and F distributions

» equivalence tests (two, one-sided tests)
Any difference, no matter how small or how irrelevant, can be made to be statistically significant if enough data is collected. Equivalence tests get around this be incorporating a minimum, relevant difference that is to be considered significant.
Concepts taught include:
- The effect of alpha, sample size and delta on equivalence.
- Two, one-sided tests (TOST)
