Statistical Process Control

This has long been a staple in manufacturing analysis but almost always on a one-response-at-a-time basis. Though useful, often it is widely recognized that process performance has much to do with combinations of factors and responses. Multi-variate SPC reveals when unusual combinations of responses that might lead to defects appear. Standard operating procedures can be adjusted to prevent these combinations from occurring or at least provide warning that these combinations are about to emerge. These methods can be incorporated into an Operations Intelligence System (below).

These systems incorporate the best of both mechanization and discovery and insight. One general area of application is what we call Operations Intelligence Systems. They assist operations personnel in dealing with production disruptions. An OIS also collects and organizes information for routine analysis in search of insights that will improve quality and productivity while reducing costs.
